How to plan your year – and stay accountable to it
If you’re yet to do your 2022 plan, read our advice on how to plan your year and stay accountable…
1. Write down your priority for the year in one sentence
E.g., “In 2022, I will prioritise health, happiness and fun” or “In 2022, I will prioritise balance and internal peace” or “In 2022, I will prioritise my career and development/growth”.
Decide what is most important to you, and when you find yourself back in the grind, come back to this. It will keep you on track.
2. Split your life into categories
Write down your goals section by section. Stick to 3-5 per category and do all your non-financial goals first.
This can/should include:
- Holidays
- Materialistic possessions
- Hobbies/fun
- Health and wellbeing
- Work
Don’t be afraid to dream big and be as specific as you can be. This may take some time, but it is worth it.
3. Work out how much you need to earn
Once you’ve figured out what you want to do with your year, calculate how much you’ll need to earn to get there. Don’t undershoot it – you will need to include all your living costs too. There are some great financial spreadsheets which can help you calculate your living costs.
Split this figure down to a monthly amount.
4. Write down how you’ll get there
Now you know where you want to be, figure out how you’ll get there. If you’re a business owner, will you launch a new product/service? Will you finally develop your personal brand which will help you sell more? Will you ask for a promotion?
Now, break this down into smaller steps. What can you do today, tomorrow, and in the next week to get you going?
5. Get an accountability partner
If you feel that you won’t stick to your goals, consider getting yourself an accountability partner. Once a week, get on the phone with your partner to create a weekly action plan. They will ask you questions, organise your thoughts, help you to break down goals, and question you if you don’t meet them. Offer to do it for them too. Check in with each other to make sure you’re on track.
